“Managing your loved ones needs without compromising yourself”

Life brings the most ordinary person a multitude of every day challenges including career, family and children, health, school or finances. Coupled with managing the health and well-being of a loved one, is it not a wonder that we can become overwhelmed, confused and searching for relief?

In the many years of guiding and assisting families with geriatric care and management, thousands of conversations have occurred, most of which point directly to the lack of time, resources and energy to appropriately handle their needs. It becomes intense and at times can feel as though the walls are moving in very rapidly, but without internally investing appropriate time to caring for the care-giver (yourself) and establishing an environment that promotes wellness and better outcomes, the cycle will continue and ultimately your loved one will become affected.

The time has come for care-giver’s to consider their well-being as being a priority and take the necessary steps to arm themselves with physical, mental, spiritual and social support and remove the preconceived idea, that it’s not about you, when in reality it is all about you. After all, how do you take care of others, if you do not take care of yourself?

Entrust in local support groups, friends, families, church or religious affiliations, national organizations relative to the diagnosis of your loved one or social media. Each of these avenues can help you if you are willing to acknowledge that there is a need however as well as guide you to manage any areas of denial that you may be experiencing.
